Lotus 23b

Lotus 23b takes to the track!

This little lotus will be taking to the track at DRIVE Festival, bringing a little bit of Nostalgia to the day.

The model Lotus 23b was designed by the innovative Colin Chapman – the founder of Lotus Sports Cars – in 1962 to take the sports car racing world by storm. Unfortunately, Chapman’s ambitious plans for the car didn’t quite come to fruition.

In 1962 our local hero, Jim Clark, raced the Lotus 23b on its debut at the Nurburgring where – after storming off into a 27 second lead initially – he crashed out on lap 12 after fumes from a cracked exhaust overpowered him!

The car was then taken to Le Mans – in June 1962 – to take on the famous 24hour race. Unfortunately, the car did not pass pre-race scrutineering on several technical matters and it never even made the start of the famous race!

Whilst the Lotus 23b had a fairly unsuccessful racing career, it’s still a spectacular piece of history and we’re delighted to have one of them at DRIVE Festival!
