Ex Ayrton Senna Formula Ford

This fabulous RF82 Van Diemen Formula Ford – with a prestigious heritage – will be taking to the Live Action arena at DRIVE Festival, in August.

The car was first driven by Brazilian racing driver – Mauricio Gugelmin – in the 1982 RAC British Formula Ford Championship.

During that year, Gugelmin and his team had some real issues with the cars handling so they brought in a young Brazilian driver, by the name of Ayrton Senna, to sort out the difficulties.

Senna – who went onto win 3 Formula 1 World Championships – was a works Van Diemen driver at the time. He tested the car at Snetterton Circuit where – after a day’s worth of running – he helped the team and his fellow countryman resolve the handling issues. Gugelmin then went onto win the British Formula Ford Championship in the car that year and eventually graduated to Formula 1 in 1988.

In more recent years the car has been raced at Knockhill and also in Scottish Hill Climb and Sprint Championships, in the hands of new owner Vernon Williamson.

We’re delighted to have this piece of history coming along to join us at DRIVE Festival. We just hope it doesn’t have any more handling issues round our track!
